about

The story behind this song comes from a documentary film called 'The Last Man On The Moon', where astronaut Eugene Cernan travels to the moon as part of Apollo 17. At the time, he travelled further than anyone has ever been, and has still to this day travelled faster than anyone has ever been as part of the Apollo 10 mission. He promised his young daughter Tracy that he'd bring her back a moonbeam and wrote her initials in the lunar dust. I was so inspired by the magic of this story, that this song came very quickly and easily. Written from the perspective of Tracy about her dad, wondering if he was going to make it home safe.

lyrics

LYRICS --------

Daddy when you taking me camping
Like you promised me you would?
We could go to the Blue Ridge mountains
In the Appalachian woods

I could stand up so tall on your shoulders
Reach out and touch the sky
And when the stars all come out at the night time
You can teach me how to fly

So daddy Gene, bring me a moonbeam
From a million miles away
In your spaceship from the moon
Straight to our living room
Oh daddy Gene
Tell me the story
Of you tumbling down to earth
Faster than any man has been
Seen things that no one else has seen
Oh please daddy Gene
Bring me a moonbeam

What was it like when you lost control
And went spinning like a top?
Crying “Houston we got a problem here
And we can't seem to stop”

What did it feel like when you finally landed
And looked back home to earth?
Cause every night you were gone I'd be gazing up
Wondering how you were

Hoping daddy Gene, would bring me a moonbeam
From a million miles away
In your spaceship from the moon
Straight to our living room
Oh daddy Gene
Tell me the story
Of you tumbling down to earth
Faster than any man has been
Seen things that no one else has seen
Oh please daddy Gene
Bring me a moonbeam

Of all the things that could go wrong
You came back safe, defied the odds
To take your place in history books
You wrote my name in lunar dust

So daddy Gene bring me a moonbeam
From a million miles away
In your spaceship from the moon
Straight to our living room
Oh daddy Gene
Tell me the story
Of you falling back to earth
Faster than any man has been
Seen things that no one else has seen
Oh please daddy Gene
Bring me a moonbeam
Bring me a moonbeam
